The daughter of 'Grateful Dead' devotee Hank Harrison and
psychologist Linda Carroll Courtney Love spent her early
years in hippy communes and at schools in Europe and New
Zealand. As a musician, she played in early incarnations
of Babes In Toyland and Faith No More, as well as acting
in bit parts for some Alex Cox films. Courtney founded her
band HOLE and released "Pretty on the Inside".
Originally a fancier of New Wavey pop sounds, she converted
to hard-core screaming and began her skyrocket ascent, Courtney
cannily contrived what she termed the "kinderwhore"
look - ripped-up baby-doll dresses with little-girl plastic
ribbons in her hair - which her friend/rival Bjelland claimed
to have invented, Love called the pair's fight over true
authorship of the style the "war of the schmatte."
She knew it would appeal to both the rebel girls and horny
boys (including rock critics). Her live rock act fulfilled
all the bravado of her pretentious press persona. In 1992,
married Nirvana singer Kurt Cobain. After Cobain's suicide
in 1994, and the release of Hole's second album "Live
Through This", Love continued to thrill and enrage
her fans and detractors with her on-stage and off-stage
antics. On the Acting side of the house, Courtney won a
golden Globe for her role in "The People VS Larry Flynt"
and has appeared in "200 Cigarettes" and the soon
to be released "Man on the Moon" with Jim Carrey.
Hole's latest album, "Celebrity Skin" has gone
multi-platinum. One thing about Courtney, she's not bashful
about her body, nor does she refrain from displaying it
on film as can be noted by the many vidcaps of her concerts
where she flashes the audience.
